There is rarely a single deer-management solution that can simply be copied from one property to another. Different habitats, deer species, population structures, ownership objectives, neighbouring land use and environmental pressures can require very different approaches.

It is to develop their understanding of why they are doing it.

A Modern Approach to Deer Management Training

The Orion Wildlife course uses a learning model designed to give candidates time to absorb the subject rather than attempting to compress a substantial body of knowledge into a few classroom days.

Candidates undertake structured learning before attending the final face-to-face element of the programme.

Pre-learning material introduce and develop the core subjects, supported by specially written course material explaining deer-management principles in a practical and accessible way.

Rather than presenting candidates with isolated facts to memorise, the learning material progressively builds an understanding of the complete management process.

Understanding Deer Management Objectives

Effective deer management begins with clearly defined objectives.

Those objectives can vary enormously.

One landowner may wish to establish new woodland. Another may be protecting natural regeneration. A forestry business may need to reduce browsing damage to commercially important trees. A conservation organisation may be attempting to restore woodland structure or protect vulnerable habitats. An agricultural business may be experiencing crop losses. Elsewhere, maintaining a healthy, sustainable deer population may itself form an important part of the management objective.

Candidates explore the difference between simply controlling deer numbers and genuinely managing a deer population.

This includes understanding the concept of population reduction followed by maintenance, and the distinction between the total surplus that may need to be removed during a population reduction programme and the annual surplus subsequently produced by a managed population.

This provides the foundation for understanding sustainable long-term deer management.

Deer Populations, Density and Population Dynamics

Knowing that deer are present is not enough.

Professional deer managers need to understand populations.

The course examines concepts including:

deer density and relative density;
population structure;
sex ratios;
recruitment;
mortality;
reproductive potential;
annual population increase;
immigration and emigration;
population modelling;
total and annual surplus;
reduction and maintenance phases of management; and
translating population information into realistic cull objectives.

Candidates learn why apparently simple questions such as “How many deer are there?” can be surprisingly difficult to answer accurately.

More importantly, they learn why an exact population figure is not always necessary to make good management decisions.

Deer Census and Population Monitoring

Census techniques form an important part of the course.

Candidates consider the strengths and limitations of different approaches to estimating and monitoring deer populations and learn the importance of repeatability and consistency.

A census is not automatically valuable simply because it produces a number.

The method used, the timing, weather conditions, observer effort, habitat and behaviour of the deer all influence the result.
Repeated consistently, however, population monitoring can provide extremely useful information about trends.
Is the population increasing?
Is it decreasing?
Has the observed sex ratio changed?
Are management interventions producing the expected result?
The emphasis throughout the course is therefore on understanding the information being collected rather than simply recording figures.

Habitat and Impact Assessment

Modern deer management cannot be based on deer numbers alone.

The question is not simply:

How many deer are present?

It is also:

What impact are those deer having?

Candidates examine the relationship between deer populations and their environment and the importance of monitoring browsing, grazing, trampling, fraying and other indicators of deer impact.

Impact assessments can provide essential evidence when determining whether management objectives are being achieved.

This becomes particularly important where objectives relate to woodland regeneration, forestry establishment, biodiversity, habitat restoration or agricultural production.

Candidates learn to recognise that the same number of deer can create very different levels of impact in different environments.

For that reason, relative deer density and impact can often be more useful management concepts than a population figure viewed in isolation.

Forestry, Woodland and Agriculture

Deer management does not take place independently of wider land management.

Candidates examine the relationship between deer and forestry, woodland management and agriculture.

This includes considering the effects that deer can have on:

woodland establishment;
natural regeneration;
tree species composition;
browsing pressure;
commercial forestry;
coppice and woodland structure;
biodiversity;
agricultural crops; and
wider landscape objectives.

The course encourages candidates to look beyond the deer themselves and understand the economic, environmental and operational reasons behind management decisions.

A professional deer manager must increasingly be capable of communicating with foresters, farmers, landowners, ecologists, conservation organisations and other stakeholders.

Recording, Monitoring and Evidence

Good deer management depends upon good information.

Record keeping therefore forms an important part of the course.

Candidates examine the purpose and value of maintaining accurate records covering areas such as population observations, census results, impact assessments, cull information and management activity.

Some records may be required for legal or administrative reasons. Others may be required as part of funding or management agreements. Many provide the evidence necessary to demonstrate whether a management programme is succeeding.

Proper records also provide continuity.

Deer management programmes frequently extend over many years and may involve different stalkers, managers, contractors or landowners.

Reliable records allow future decisions to be based upon evidence rather than recollection.

Modern technology has made the collection, storage and analysis of this information increasingly practical, but technology does not replace understanding.

The candidate must still know what information is worth collecting and what that information means.

From Evidence to a Cull Plan

Eventually, information has to become action.

Candidates examine how management objectives, population information, habitat impacts and population dynamics can be brought together to develop an appropriate cull strategy.

This includes considering not simply the total number of animals to be removed, but also the structure of that cull.

Species, sex and age can all influence the future direction of a population.

A properly considered cull is therefore very different from simply removing whatever deer happen to present themselves.

Candidates are encouraged to understand the consequences of management decisions and how today's cull influences the population that will exist in future years.

Developing a Deer Management Plan

Ultimately, the different strands of the course come together in the development and interpretation of a Deer Management Plan.

A meaningful management plan should not simply be a document produced and then forgotten.

It should explain:

Where are we now?
Where do we want to be?
What evidence supports that conclusion?
What action are we going to take?
How will we measure the result?
When will we review the plan?

Candidates learn how population information, impact assessments, management objectives, cull records and other evidence can be combined to create a structured management approach.

They also consider the importance of reviewing and adapting management.

A Deer Management Plan should be a working document.

If monitoring shows that the desired results are not being achieved, management should change accordingly.

Learning Beyond the Screen

An important feature of the Orion Wildlife programme is the connection between online learning and what candidates can observe for themselves in the field.

Candidates are encouraged to undertake self-led field observations and environmental surveys, applying the principles introduced through the learning material to real landscapes.

This helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.

A description of browsing pressure means considerably more once a candidate has examined it in woodland.

Population monitoring makes more sense when the limitations of visibility, habitat and deer behaviour have been experienced first-hand.

The purpose is to encourage candidates to begin thinking and observing like deer managers before they arrive for the final taught and assessed element of the course.

The Final Two-Day In-Person Course

The learning programme culminates in an intensive two-day face-to-face session with the Orion Wildlife instructional team.

These two days provide the opportunity to consolidate the online learning, explore more complex management scenarios and discuss the realities of practical deer management directly with Nick Rout, Dominic Griffith and Glyn Ingram.

Rather than simply repeating the online material, the face-to-face sessions are designed to develop understanding.

Candidates can expect discussion, practical examples, management scenarios and the opportunity to work through the reasoning behind management decisions.

The course then progresses into the formal assessment process required for the qualification.

Assessment is undertaken properly within the DMQ system, with the appropriate internal and external verification processes, providing candidates with confidence that the qualification has been achieved against the required standard.

Who Is the Course For?

The DMQ Deer Management Course is particularly relevant to people who want to move beyond recreational deer stalking and develop a deeper understanding of professional deer management.

It is also highly relevant to those seeking to progress professionally within the deer sector.

You do not need to arrive knowing everything about deer management.

That is the purpose of the course.

What you do need is a willingness to look beyond the shot and understand the much larger management process of which that shot may ultimately form only a very small part.

It is advised that attendees have a good background in deer knowledge, this is usually through having achieved DSC1 or an ecology background covering deer.
