Norfolk Stalking Scheme

At Orion Wildlife Training, we provide structured, professional deer stalking and mentoring experiences across carefully managed ground in Norfolk, delivering far more than a day in the field. Our programmes are designed for individuals who want to develop genuine competence in deer management — whether you are new to stalking, building confidence after DSC1, or working towards completion of your DSC2 portfolio.

This is serious training in real conditions, grounded in ethical wildlife management, safety, and best practice.

Professional Deer Stalking in Norfolk

Based in the varied landscapes of Norfolk, our stalking takes place across a mix of arable farmland, woodland blocks, cover crops, and estate ground. These diverse habitats support healthy deer populations and provide realistic, dynamic stalking scenarios that reflect modern deer management challenges.

Participants learn to operate within real-world variables — shifting wind, changing light, crop margins, woodland rides, and natural backstops — developing not only shooting ability but decision-making judgement.

We offer outings for 1 or 2 participants at a time, each individual receives meaningful mentoring and field time with their own guide. Whether you attend alone for intensive one-to-one development or as part of a small group, the emphasis remains on quality over quantity.

A Structured Learning Experience

Our approach integrates practical fieldcraft with technical understanding. Each outing can be tailored to your experience level and objectives, including:

  • Safe rifle handling and transport in live field environments

  • Risk assessment and safe shot angles

  • Deer identification (species, sex, age estimation)

  • Population management principles

  • Shot placement and terminal ballistics awareness

  • High seat stalking and woodland approaches

  • Use of wind, terrain, and cover

  • Humane dispatch and follow-up procedures

  • Gralloching and hygienic carcass handling

  • Inspection in line with food hygiene regulations

The focus is on developing a competent, thinking stalker — not simply creating an opportunity to shoot.

DSC2 Witnessing & Portfolio Development

For candidates progressing through the Deer Stalking Certificate Level 2 (DSC2), Orion Wildlife Training provides structured opportunities to complete witnessed stalks under professional supervision.

We understand that DSC2 is not a box-ticking exercise; it is a demonstration of safe, ethical, and competent deer management in real situations. During your time with us, you will be supported in demonstrating proficiency in:

  • Pre-stalk planning and safety checks

  • Environmental and backstop awareness

  • Humane shot execution

  • Follow-up and dispatch protocols

  • Deer inspection and carcass hygiene

  • Biosecurity and legal compliance

Our aim is to help you build confidence alongside competence, ensuring your portfolio evidence reflects genuine capability in the field.

Ethical Wildlife Management at the Core

Everything we do is rooted in responsible deer management. Modern stalking is not simply about harvest; it is about balancing populations with habitat, agriculture, forestry, and biodiversity.

Across Norfolk’s mixed landscapes, deer management plays a crucial role in reducing crop damage, supporting woodland regeneration, and maintaining ecological balance. As part of your experience, we discuss wider management considerations, including:

  • Impact assessment and carrying capacity

  • Seasonal cull planning

  • Welfare considerations

  • Venison as a sustainable food source

  • Public perception and professional conduct

Participants leave with a broader understanding of the responsibilities that come with pulling the trigger.

Small Groups. Personalised Mentoring. Multiple days.

We can also offer outings for up to three people at once, (each will have their own guide), and can offer back to back days and personalised packages.

By offering outings to a maximum of three participants, we ensure:

  • One to One guiding.

  • Clear communication and safe rifle supervision

  • Constructive feedback after each stalk

  • A calm, focused learning environment

There is no rush, no conveyor belt approach, and no pressure to shoot beyond safe and ethical conditions. Decisions in the field are discussed and evaluated, reinforcing good judgement and safe practice.
